Climate Matters

Climate change encompasses not only rising average temperatures but also extreme weather events, and a range of other impacts. All of these changes are emerging as humans continue to add heat-trapping greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.

The fashion industry is responsible for up to 10% of global carbon emissions and needs to nearly halve its emissions total by 2030 to prevent severe climate change impacts. But instead, the industry is on track to double emissions by 2050. The reality is that we all need to do a lot more.

Labtex is getting even more serious about reducing our carbon footprint and investing in solutions that remove more greenhouse gases than we emit. Over the years, we have changed our business in all kinds of ways, from how we source our raw materials to how our fabrics are made. And while we might not know exactly how to pull it all off just yet, here’s how we’re getting started…

We categorized climate action into two directions: Sustainable Materials, and Cleaner Production Processes.

 A. Sustainable Materials

1. Recycle Fibers

1 yard of fabric can be produced using 8 to 15 plastic bottles. Instead of letting plastic into our landfills, we turn them into aesthetic fabrics.

Each year there are

5,329,1093+ /yr

recycle bottles being used to produce Labtex’s fabrics.

2. Regenerative Fibers

Labtex is determined to create fabrics that are high quality and have the lowest impact on our environment.  Regenerative fibers, like cotton and wool, are sourced from farms that use climate-positive agricultural and land management practices that restore the soil instead of disturbing it.

Estimated 640,000 tons of fishing gear is left in the ocean each year

According to The Guardian, lost and abandoned fishing gear make up the majority of large plastic pollution in the oceans. Labtex’s mission is to regenerate recycled fishnets into fabrics. Our focus is to proactively provide a cleaner environment for the next generations.

All of our recycled polyester yarns are traceable from the post-consumer used plastic bottles.

Our carefully sourced biodegradable polyester is not only made from post-consumer used plastic bottles, but we have also enhanced its biodegradability by embedding a special finish into the yarn. Biodegradable polyester not only breaks down into smaller pieces, but also reduces to simpler monomer structures, which can be further degraded by bacteria into carbon dioxide, water, and humus, and the polymer will not remain in the earth.

In other words, in the end, there will be NO micro-plastic remnants in nature.

B. Cleaner Production Processes

1. Clean System

Labtex is Bluesign® System Partner & OekoTex® 100 certified. With an A+ grade in textile dyeing, Bluesign & OekoTex 100 certified dyeing facilities only use safe input chemicals. We monitor the air and water emissions and ensure workers’ safety so that the dyed fabric is safe for the end-user, workers, and the environment.

2. Clean Energy

There is no single solution to keep the rise in the global average temperature below 2°C. Many different solutions are urgently needed for a successful transition to a low-carbon world. Climate scientists have pretty much agreed that once global average temperatures increase above 1.5 degrees Celsius we are, unfortunately, totally messed up.

The reality in this scenario looks like severe heat waves, rising seas, declining coral reefs and global fisheries, and other climate-related impacts—putting the lives of hundreds of millions of people at risk. We’re in the process of calculating emission reduction targets to stay under 1.5 degrees C and hopefully avoid the worst of those impacts.

We tailor solutions that aim to avoid and reduce or compensate for the emissions of your business.
